About Thorns series

Remnants

I am a gardener and have long used the media of branches in my work. In this series I am taking discarded materials from my garden debris and increasing their importance by casting them or placing them as archival specimens as an act of preservation, intended for further examination.

Archive series: Archival Records, Case Histories, Material Instinct, Specimens

As a gardener I enjoy contemplative hours spent cultivating and reflecting on life in the privacy of my yard. Discarded branches are savored for their relationship to preservation, as opposed to their inevitable degeneration. I have combined these castoffs with the sensual material of beeswax and created cast tiles that contrast a vulnerable translucent surface with sharp protuberances found on rose branches in particular. I have then configured them as if to catalogue and document them as though they were archived and as such, have their former associations transformed.
